Murray Applauds Bipartisan Passage of Jobs Bill, Urges Continued Focus on Growing Economy and Creating Jobs

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) issued the following statement after the Senate voted to pass the Hiring Incentives to Restore Employment (HIRE) Act by a margin of 70-28. The HIRE Act is the first of a number of job bills Senator Murray will be working to pass to help get Washington state workers back to work.

“This bill is a another step to getting workers back on the job and to giving our small businesses the help they need. It provides an important tax cut that will put money back in the pockets of small business owners, and gives them an incentive to put up the ‘help wanted’ sign once again. It also makes a critical investment in building roads and highways to help construction and manufacturing workers who have been hit hard by this recession.

“But there is still so much more to do. Last week, I sat down with small business owners who told me they have had to turn to family, personal credit cards, and payday loans to keep their doors open. At a time when we are counting on small businesses to help turn our economy around, this is simply unacceptable.

“We need to spend more time focused on the problems of Main Street and local business owners and less on Wall Street and big CEOs. More time coming together to deliver results for real people and less time fighting along partisan lines for political points. Today is a sign that we are moving in the right direction but we still have a lot of work to do to get our businesses hiring, our economy growing, and our workers back on the job.”
