Statement by Senator Murray on Agriculture Sale to Cuba

Mar 07 2002

Senator applauds Cantwell leadership, Cuba trip

Our state's Congressional delegation has pushed for years to open Cuba to Washington's many agricultural commodities. We now need to build upon the momentum of this first purchase to push for further changes in U.S. policy towards Cuba.

Opening the Cuban marketplace means new markets for Washington state producers. Congress should now recognize that Cuba is a viable market and further ease restrictions on trade, especially in agriculture.

The real credit for this sale belongs to Senator Maria Cantwell. She went to Cuba with a Washington state delegation, she encouraged the Cubans to look to Washington state, and our apple and pea producers are the immediate beneficiaries. Her trip to Cuba successfully raised the profile of Washington agriculture in Cuba.
