"Today marks the 34th anniversary of the Title IX ruling which expanded our nation's definition of gender equality. Since 1972, Title IX has opened doors in athletics and education for millions of young women across our nation. The statistics on Tile IX are amazing. It has helped women break down barriers all across the country and has transformed the lives of women through their accomplishments in the classroom and on the playing field.

"The challenge for all of us today is to make sure that those doors of opportunity stay open for our granddaughters and great-granddaughters. As we celebrate the anniversary of this important law, I urge President Bush and Secretary of Education Spellings to protect existing Title IX policies that give every young girl in American the chance to experience the challenges of competition, the value of teamwork, and the thrills of success."
