(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – In response to a federal appeals court ruling that the Pledge of Allegiance cannot be recited in public schools because the phrase "under God" endorses religion, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-Wash.) today cosponsored a Senate resolution supporting the Pledge. The resolution passed 99-0.

Murray issued the following statement.

"I was proud to stand with my Senate colleagues today in support of reciting the Pledge of Allegiance in America's schools.

School children across America have grown up with the Pledge of Allegiance for generations. I grew up reciting the Pledge and I proudly recite it in the Senate every day. The Pledge of Allegiance should remain an important and symbolic American tradition."
