Murray Announces $1.7 Million to Reduce Alcohol Abuse by Mt. Vernon and Burien Youth

Federal grants will help implement programs to reduce alcohol abuse among secondary school students

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-Wash.) today announced that the Northwest Educational Service District 189 (ESD 189) in Mt. Vernon and the Puget Sound ESD in Burien will receive a total of $1.7 million in federal grant money to support the development and implementation of programs to reduce alcohol abuse in secondary schools.

Awarded under the U.S. Department of Education's Grants to Reduce Alcohol Abuse Program, the funds will be released to the local educational agencies within the week.

"As a parent and former teacher, I know how important it is to educate young people about the dangers of alcohol abuse. That's why I'm proud to have helped bring federal funding to our local communities to help promote healthy lifestyles for our children," said Senator Murray.
