I was deeply saddened to learn that Sgt. 1st Class Nathan Ross Chapman was killed in action while serving our country in Afghanistan. This is a loss for his family, for the Army, and for the Washington State community. Washington State has lost a son, a father, and a patriot.

My heart goes out to his family during this very difficult time. I hope they may take some comfort knowing that Sgt. Chapman has given his life so that we may continue to live in freedom.

During a recent visit to Fort Lewis in September, I was struck by the professionalism and poise of each of the soldiers I met. Washington State is fortunate to be home to so many of America's finest soldiers, sailors, and airmen.

The loss of Sgt. Chapman is a painful reminder of the honor and courage of the men and women serving in the armed forces. Our nation is grateful for their service and their sacrifice.
