Senator Patty Murray Announces Funding for Washington Firefighters

Over $260,000 in federal FEMA grants will support firefighter training programs

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-Wash.) today announced the release of $260,422 in federal funds for firefighter training programs at four Washington State Fire Departments. The grants, awarded under the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Assistance for Firefighters Program, will support departments in Aberdeen, Dayton, Port Townsend, and Tacoma. Senator Murray secured the funding for Washington State training programs through her position on the Senate Appropriations Committee.

"Everyday, Washington's firefighters put themselves in harms way in order to keep our communities and families safe. But as we were tragically reminded less than two weeks ago, the safety of these brave men and women must also be a priority," said Senator Murray. "We must make sure that our firefighters have the proper training and skills to do their jobs and to do them safely. That is why I am pleased to announce these FEMA grants to support firefighter training programs throughout Washington State."

These initial awards are part of more than $100 million in grants that will be distributed by FEMA through September 30. The first awards are for training, to be followed by grants for vehicles, firefighting equipment, personal protective equipment, wellness and fitness programs, and fire prevention programs.

More than 19,700 fire departments across the country, both volunteer and career, applied for grants this year, submitting requests totaling almost $2.98 billion.

The Washington State fire departments slated for grants are:

  • Aberdeen Fire Department, Aberdeen: $69,025
  • Columbia County Fire District # 3, Dayton: $31,500
  • City of Port Townsend Fire Department, Port Townsend: $3,897
  • City of Tacoma Fire Department, Tacoma: $156,000
