Aug 19 2009

Funding will create jobs and help small shipyards make critical infrastructure improvements

(Washington, D.C.) - Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) announced that ten Washington state shipyards will receive a total of $7,384,481 through the Maritime Administration’s (MARAD) Supplemental Grants for Assistance to Small Shipyards program that Senator Murray worked to include in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

“I’m thrilled that ten more Washington state shipyards will get this crucial financial boost to help them create jobs and make vital capital improvements,” Senator Murray said.  “Our small shipyards are a critical piece of our domestic maritime industry – and of Washington state’s economy.  Especially while our economy is struggling, these grants are important to help our domestic shipping industry stay strong and competitive.”

MARAD released 70 grants today totaling $98,000,000 for small shipyards across the country, Washington state’s ten projects were the most won by any state.

As the Chairman of the Transportation and Housing Appropriations Subcommittee overseeing funding for the Department of Transportation and MARAD, Senator Murray included $100 million in the Recovery Act to improve small shipyards, create jobs and ensure that our shipyards have the tools to compete in the global economy. Senator Murray voted to pass the Recovery Act on February 13th. The bill was signed into law by President Obama on February 17th.
