PUGET SOUND: Murray Will Continue to Fight for Strong Cleanup Investment Included in President’s Budget Proposal

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) released the following statement after the Obama Administration released its funding proposal for Puget Sound recovery and cleanup. The announcement includes $30 million for Puget Sound recovery and clean up, $2 million more than was enacted in fiscal year 2016.

“Strong federal investments in the recovery, protection, and cleanup of Puget Sound are critically important to the economic, cultural, and environmental identity of Washington state,” said Senator Murray. “I am very encouraged that the President has made such a strong commitment to Puget Sound restoration efforts in his request, and I will be working hard to make this commitment a reality.”

These investments would supplement state and local efforts to implement Washington state’s Puget Sound Action Agenda, the region’s framework document for Puget Sound recovery. The Action Agenda brings together state and federal agencies, tribal governments, local governments, business and environmental groups, and other stakeholders to advance projects designed to improve habitat, reduce pollution, and restore the Puget Sound watershed. Cleanup of Puget Sound is critical to the recovery of several Endangered Species Act-listed salmon species, the protection of tribal treaty rights, and to the environmental and economic future of Washington state.
