SALMON: Murray on President’s Budget Proposal: Critical to “Washington State’s Culture, Economy, Tribes, and Recreation”

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray released the following statement after the Obama Administration released its funding proposal for Pacific Coastal Salmon Recovery Fund (PCSRF) for fiscal year 2017. The proposal includes $65 million in investments, the same amount enacted for fiscal year 2016, and would be used to support local, state, and tribal programs that work to restore and protect salmon habitats.

“I am glad the president has recognized how critical investments in salmon restoration are, especially to Washington state’s culture, economy, tribes, and recreation,” Senator Murray said. “I will continue to fight for this investment as this process moves forward to make sure we continue to support good-paying jobs and essential investments in salmon habitat and recovery.”

Congress created PCSRF in fiscal year 2000 to protect, restore and conserve Pacific salmon populations and their habitats, and to address the impacts of the Pacific Salmon Treaty Agreement between the United States and Canada. PCSRF supports the conservation and recovery of Pacific salmon across the rivers, watersheds and coastal habitats of several western states. With this funding, states and tribes have undertaken more than 12,200 projects. As a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Senator Murray will fight to sustain this proposed funding level throughout the appropriations process in Congress.
