EASTERN WASHINGTON: Murray Statement on $9.7 Million Federal Investment to WA Company

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) released the following statement applauding the U.S. Department of Energy’s decision to grant $9.758 million in federal funds to Pullman-based Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories to develop improved cybersecurity systems, wireless communications technology, and security software. The competitive grants are part of a nationwide effort from the Department of Energy to strengthen and protect American oil and gas infrastructure from cyber attack.

“Federal infrastructure investments are crucial to our safety and our economy, and though we often think first of roads and bridges, our energy infrastructure is just as critical to our nation’s economic and physical security,” said Senator Patty Murray.  “I applaud the Department of Energy for continuing their focus on protecting our infrastructure from cyber attacks and making this investment in Eastern Washington.”

Today’s grants to Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories are part of the Obama Administration’s commitment to protecting America’s critical infrastructure.  Since 2010, the Energy Department has invested more than $100 million in cybersecurity research and development through awards and funding provided to industry, universities and national laboratories.
