(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senators Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell sent a letter to Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Chairman Tom Carper and Ranking Member Tom Coburn urging them to pass a bill out of their committee to name the Eatonville Post Office after Mount Rainier National Park Ranger Margaret Anderson. Ranger Anderson was fatally shot in the line of duty on January 1, 2012. In recognition of Ranger Anderson’s courage and sacrifice, Representative Dave Reichert introduced H.R.1036, to rename a post office in Eatonville in her honor. This legislation passed the House of Representatives by voice vote on March 24th, 2014. The bill has not yet passed out of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs and the Senators urge immediate action to bring the bill to the Senate floor.
“Naming the Eatonville Post Office after Ranger Anderson will honor her dedication to public service, and the dedication of all those who put their lives on the line daily to protect the public,” the Senators wrote in the letter. “It is our sincere hope that you will report this bill out of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and bring it to the Senate floor for final passage.”

Dear Chairman Carper and Ranking Member Coburn:
We write today in support of H.R.1036, a bill to designate the facility of the United States Postal Service located at 103 Center Street West in Eatonville, Washington, as the “National Park Ranger Margaret Anderson Post Office.” We respectfully request you report this legislation out of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and bring it to the Senate floor as soon as possible.
Mount Rainier National Park Ranger Margaret Anderson was fatally shot in the line of duty on January 1, 2012. That morning, Ranger Anderson had set up a roadblock to intercept a fleeing vehicle that had failed to stop at a snow-chain checkpoint in the park. When the driver of the vehicle reached the roadblock, he shot and killed Ranger Anderson.
Ranger Anderson’s courageous actions prevented the suspect from traveling further into the park and causing additional harm to others. She made the ultimate sacrifice to protect the public and her National Park Service colleagues at Mount Rainier National Park. Ranger Anderson served in the National Park Service for twelve years, and served three years at Mount Rainier National Park. She is survived by her husband, Eric, also a Mount Rainier National Park Ranger, and their two young children.
