Senator Murray Memorial Day Statement

Seattle, WA – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), a senior member of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee and the daughter of a World War II veteran and Purple Heart recipient, released the following statement this Memorial Day.

“The stories of our fallen servicemembers are the stories of America—from its founding to the present day. On Memorial Day, we pay tribute to those who fought to protect our democracy and shaped our history, and we mourn those we have lost just recently.

“Today we remember the cost of war and the sacrifices our military families make. I hope friends and neighbors in every part of Washington state take a moment to reflect on those sacrifices today. As a voice for Washington state in the Senate, I will always work to honor those we’ve lost.”

Senator Murray served as the first female Chair of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee during the 112th Congress. As Chair of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee, Senator Murray worked closely with Republicans to spotlight the needs of women veterans and to expand benefits and support for veteran caregivers—and always emphasized the responsibility Congress has to support the veterans of any conflict. Senator Murray has always taken her obligation to our servicemembers seriously, stating on the Senate floor recently, “The decision about whether or not to go to war and put servicemembers’ lives at risk is the most serious and most consequential issue we can debate here in the United States Senate.”
