HANFORD: Senator Murray Praises Overall Increase in Tight Budget Year

(Washington, D.C.) – Today U.S. Senator Patty Murray released the following statement on President Obama’s budget request for Hanford cleanup efforts in Fiscal Year 2011. Tomorrow Senator Murray will be questioning White House Budget Director Peter Orszag to get additional answers on the specifics of the budget. Among the issues she will be working to get more information on are details on how this budget affects meeting goals at the Richland Operations Office and on groundwater cleanup efforts.

“In a very difficult budget year, this Hanford budget keeps cleanup on track and workers on the job. It is a recognition by the Obama Administration that Hanford cleanup is vital not only to environmental cleanup but also to economic recovery.

“At a time when every program is on the table for cuts, going to bat for Hanford has been a top priority of mine. While nuclear cleanup may not be as politically glamorous as other issues, I have worked hard to ensure that this administration and my colleagues understand that it provides family wage jobs, protects our environment, and meets legal and moral obligations that we can never walk away from.

“I will continue to work to ensure that we have clear and consistent budgets for Hanford cleanup. I am pleased that beginning with the Recovery Act through today’s budget request we have been able to make real cleanup progress working with the Obama administration.”

HANFORD/NUCLEAR CLEANUP FUNDING FISCAL YEAR 2011:

  • Overall Nuclear Cleanup Funding Nationwide (Environmental Management) – $6,047,000,000
  • Hanford Cleanup Funding: $2,127,000,000 – Up from $2,088,000,000 in Fiscal Year 2010
