MUKILTEO: Senator Murray Announces Air Force Transfer of Tank Farm to Port of Everett

Today, June 4th, 2013, U.S. Senator Patty Murray announced the United States Air Force (USAF) will transfer the Mukilteo Defense Fuel Support Point, including roughly 20 acres of land and facilities to the Port of Everett, WA, and the U.S. Department of Commerce.

“Today is a victory for the Everett community and the stakeholders involved with this transfer who all worked together to find a solution to this complex, and often difficult process,” Senator Murray said. “I’m proud to have taken part in crafting this agreement, and I’m confident the transfer announced today will benefit the community and our state for years to come.”

“This is a great day for the City of Mukilteo and the region,” said Mukilteo Mayor Joe Marine.  “This action by the Air Force means we are one step closer to reclaiming our waterfront.  For more than 60 years the community has not had access to 20 acres on the shore of Puget Sound.  This would not be possible without Senator Murray’s tireless work.”

For more than a decade, Senator Murray has been instrumental in facilitating the transfer of the land and infrastructure, which served as a fuel storage and distribution terminal until 1990.  A small portion of the land, 1.1 acres, will be transferred to the Secretary of Commerce for use by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS).

Murray first acted to secure the transfer through the Defense Authorization Act in 2001 and 2002.  She has since worked with the USAF and local officials to coordinate a mutually agreeable transfer process.

The transfer will play an important role in revitalizing the Mukilteo waterfront.  In addition to benefitting the Port, land transferred to NMFS will support efforts to modernize the Northwest Fisheries Science Center field research station, benefitting on-going long term studies on the health of Puget Sound and providing improved access to educational opportunities to elementary, high school and college students.
