Murray Announces Additional $14M for Critical Lower Monumental Lock and Dam Repairs

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) announced that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will be adding $14 million to repair the critical Snake River Lower Monumental Lock and Dam. These funds, included in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, will go toward design, fabrication, and construction of a replacement for this important piece of Washington state’s infrastructure.

“Keeping the Columbia Snake River system open for commerce is critical to communities up and down the river,” said Senator Patty Murray. “These funds will help farmers and business owners move their products to market, and will help keep our hydroelectric system strong. I have consistently fought to ensure that the Army Corps has the resources it needs to continue to provide the infrastructure that our state needs, and I am pleased that these funds have been added.”

Senator Murray has been a leader in the Senate in fighting for resources for critical Army Corps projects. She secured close to $7 million in the 2010 Senate Energy and Water Development Appropriations bill for the Lower Monumental Lock and Dam, which was $4 million more than the President’s request.

As a senior member of the Senate committee that funds the Army Corps, Murray worked to ensure that investments in Washington state infrastructure was a key component of the Recovery Act.  Senator Murray voted to pass the Recovery Act on February 13th. The bill was signed into law by President Obama on February 17th.
