Murray Announces School Safety Grant for Walla Walla

(WASHINGTON, D.C.)– Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray announced that Walla Walla has been selected to receive a federal Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) grant to improve student safety.

“Everywhere I go, I talk to police chiefs, sheriffs and anti-gang units who tell me the same thing – they’re being asked to do more with less. So while budgets are tight on the local, state and federal levels, this grant will help Walla Walla law enforcement keep our kids safe,” Senator Murray said.  “Community policing is a proven way to reduce crime and improve the safety of entire communities.  With this help, officers can serve as mentors to our children and help them learn community responsibility at an early age.”

Walla Walla County Sheriff’s Office will receive $16,500 from the Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS). This grant comes from almost $16 million awarded today under the FY09 Secure Our Schools (SOS) grant program.  SOS grants provide funding to state, local, or tribal governments to assist with the procurement of school safety resources and the opportunity to establish and enhance a variety of school safety equipment and/or programs.

As a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Senator Murray worked to secure funding for the COPS program.
