Murray Announces Washington State Port Security Recovery Funding

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) announced that Washington state ports will receive funding for port security efforts included in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The funds, which will now be to be distributed to state ports, will go toward infrastructure security improvements including chemical detectors, cameras, security gates, access controls, and training and exercises.

“As we work to create jobs and reinvest in Washington state, it is vital that our ports remain secure and open for business,” Senator Murray said. "With millions of containers passing through our region each year, and with thousands of good paying jobs tied to our ports, these grants are critical to ensuring that our state’s ports employ the right technology and training methods to help prevent possible attacks.”

As a senior member of the Senate Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee and a national leader on port security, Senator Murray fought for strong national funding for port security to be included in the Recovery Act.  Senator Murray voted to pass the Recovery Act on February 13th. The bill was signed into law by President Obama on February 17th.

The Port Security funding will be distributed to the following ports in Washington state:

  • Port of Tacoma: $3,367,092
  • Port of Everett: $1,501,617
  • Port of Seattle: $794,040
  • Port of Anacortes: $575,155
  • Port of Olympia: $488,630
  • Port of Vancouver: $480,735
