Murray Applauds Key Senate Vote for Housing Package to Help Struggling Homeowners

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) released the following statement after the Senate voted 80-13 in favor of moving the housing reform bill toward final passage.  The vote was a crucial step forward for the bill, which would provide help to families struggling in the economic downturn.

The housing package includes critical funding to expand housing counseling efforts, as well as tax credits to stimulate activity in the housing market.  It also would modernize the Federal Housing Administration and take steps to restore confidence in Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

“Today’s vote was an important, and long overdue, step toward addressing the housing crisis at the heart of our economic downturn.  Finally, we’re poised to help thousands of families at risk of losing their homes.

“I was glad that President Bush finally got behind this bill so that we can get this much-needed assistance to the families and communities that need it.”
