Murray, Hastings Announce Emergency Relief Funding for Nile Valley Landslide

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-Wash.), Chairman of the Senate Transportation Appropriations Subcommittee, and U.S. Representative Doc Hastings today announced the release of $1 million in Emergency Relief Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) funding that they secured to help accelerate the reconstruction and repair of the section of SR-410 near Naches.

“This Emergency Relief funding will help the community get back on its feet after a landslide that damaged a critical road, destroyed homes, and endangered the well-being of so many families,” Senator Murray said.  "I spoke with Secretary LaHood today  and he assured me that federal support is on the way."

“Quick emergency support from the federal government is warranted and will help the community rebound and rebuild,” said Representative Hastings. “My staff is touring the area today with Yakima County officials and I look forward to getting the latest report from the ground.”

The Emergency Relief program provides funds for the repair or reconstruction of Federal-aid highways and roads on Federal lands that have suffered serious damage as a result of natural disasters or catastrophic failure from an external cause.

On Sunday, Oct. 11, a massive landslide demolished a half-mile of SR 410 15 miles west of Naches. The landslide pushed significant amounts of earth and pavement into the Naches River, destroying at least two homes and changing the river’s course. Dozens of nearby residents were evacuated because of potential flooding. A state of emergency was declared in Yakima County by Governor Gregoire due to the damage.
