Murray: Let’s Build on Momentum, Pass SAME Act

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) released the following statement after the Senate approved an amendment to its FY16 Budget to ensure all legally married same-sex spouses have equal access to the Social Security and veterans benefits they have earned. In a strong bipartisan vote, 11 Republican Senators joined Democrats in passing the amendment.

“I was proud to introduce the SAME Act so that legally married same sex couples get equal treatment under the law, regardless of where they live,” said Senator Murray. “Last night’s vote showed that a bipartisan majority of Senators agree that equality under our federal laws should not end at state lines, and I’m going to be fighting hard in Congress to build on this momentum and make sure we get this done.”

Last week, Senator Murray reintroduced the Social Security and Marriage Equality (SAME) Act to ensure all same-sex spouses receive equal treatment under the Social Security Act when applying for Social Security benefits, regardless of where they live.
