Murray Secures Millions in Job-Creating Defense Spending for Washington State in Critical Bill

(Washington, D.C) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) announced that she has included $63 million in federal defense work for Washington state companies in the Fiscal Year 2010 Defense Appropriations bill. Murray, who serves on the Senate Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, helped pass the bill out of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee today.

“This spending will create good jobs in Washington state and help our armed forces get the cutting-edge military equipment they need and deserve,” said Senator Patty Murray. “Washington state companies are at the forefront of research and innovation, and these contracts will give them the resources they need to continue developing new ways to keep our service members and country safe. The spending I have included in this bill will provide a critical boost to the economy, and it will make a strong investment in research, technology, and innovation in Washington state.”

Washington state projects:

Positron Capture and Storage

Recipient:       Washington State University

Amount:         $3,000,000

Location:        Pullman, WA

 

This funding would expand research for the Army into positrons, a new, non-nuclear energy source. This would advance cutting edge research with potential applications in fields ranging from space travel to medical diagnostics.

Force Protection Radar for Forward Operating Bases

Recipient:       Trident Systems Incorporated

Amount:         $2,000,000

Location:        Spokane, WA

This funding would develop and deploy a portable, rugged radar system for the Army to identify perimeter threats despite obscured weather conditions or dense foliage at combat bases. This valuable perimeter security tool would protect U.S. troops deployed at small bases in Iraq and Afghanistan.

 

Malaria Vaccine Development

Recipient:       Seattle Biomedical Research Institute (SBRI)

Amount:         $5,000,000

Location:        Seattle, WA

This funding would further the development of a malaria vaccine for the Army. Exposure to malaria while deployed is a top concern of the U.S. military. The development of a vaccine would prevent infection, enhance operational readiness, lower health care costs, and keep servicemembers healthy when deployed to regions with a heightened risk of malaria infection.

Special Operations Forces (SOF) Modular Glove System

Recipient:       Outdoor Research

Amount:         $5,000,000

Location:        Seattle, WA

This funding would provide Special Operations Forces (SOF) with advanced, adaptable gloves which function across a spectrum of weather conditions while preserving user dexterity and comfort. In addition to supporting jobs in King County, this would help protect Special Operations personnel from extreme weather conditions and enhance their ability to carry out wartime missions.

Global Unmanned Aircraft System Networking and Interoperability System (GUNIS)

Recipient:       CoCo Communications Corp.

Amount:         $4,500,000

Location:        Seattle, WA

This funding would develop a communications system for the Marine Corps to allow the more reliable, secure and efficient transfer of digitized information. This would enhance combat situational awareness, allowing battlefield commanders to utilize information more effectively and making military operations safer and more efficient.

Regenerative Medicine for Acute Deafness

Recipient:       FATE Therapeutics

Amount:         $3,000,000

Location:        Seattle, WA

This funding would use advanced stem cell research and developmental biology to develop therapeutic treatments for acute hearing loss among Army soldiers. This would advance safe and effective treatments for acute hearing loss, which affects many men and women of the Army on return home from war.

Multi-Dose Closed-Loop pH Monitoring System for Platelets

Recipient:       Blood Cell Storage Inc.

Amount:         $2,000,000

Location:        Seattle, WA

This funding would help the Army develop a capability to ensure the efficacy of platelets in large samples. Platelets are necessary to stop blood loss from severe injuries.  This project would help reduce battlefield deaths caused by transfusions of ineffective platelets.

Advanced Night Vision System – Cockpit Integration

Recipient:       Korry Electronics

Amount:         $1,000,000

Location:        Seattle, WA

This funding would use dye chemistry and plastic filter technology to develop and prototype the next generation of night vision goggles for Air Force pilots. This funding would advance night vision technology, help the U.S. regain its night vision dominance, and ultimately increase the safety and effectiveness of U.S. pilots.

On-Chip Integrated Photonic Polymer Transceiver

Recipient:       Gigoptix

Amount:         $5,000,000

Location:        Bothell, WA

This funding would develop a cutting edge modulator for the Air Force capable of transmitting 200 gigabytes of data, which could decrease the size, weight, and energy usage of some of the military’s most critical technology systems. This would continue important research to enable the production of faster, smaller, and more energy efficient power and communications systems to help the Air Force maintain its edge in the air.

Optical Neural Techniques for Combat/Post-Trauma Healthcare

Recipient:       Lockheed Martin Aculight Corporation

Amount:         $4,000,000

Location:        Bothell, WA

This funding would develop new laser stimulation technology for the Army to address hearing loss, balance disorders and other medical conditions affecting soldiers. This innovative approach towards hearing loss and other medical conditions would advance research to better care for soldiers returning from war.

Next Generation Solar Electric In-Space Propulsion

Recipient:       Aerojet Redmond Operations

Amount:         $1,000,000

Location:        Redmond, WA

This funding would develop and prototype solar-powered electronics to control thrusters on Air Force satellites. This would use cutting edge technology to reduce satellite weight and fuel consumption, allowing them to carry larger payloads at less cost to the taxpayer.

Navy Automatic Identification Technology (AIT) Logistics Modernization Initiative

Recipient:       Intermec Technologies Corporation

Amount:         $4,000,000

Location:        Everett, WA

This funding would modernize the Navy’s supply chain management using portable computer technology. This would improve the Navy’s supply and logistics system, thereby lowering costs, increasing accountability, and improving the flow of goods and materials to the sailor.

Expeditionary Swimmer Defense System (XSDS)

Recipient:       Sound and Sea Technologies

Amount:         $4,000,000

Location:        Lynnwood, WA

This funding would use physical barriers and sensor systems to protect Navy ships against maritime threats while in port. In addition to supporting jobs in Snohomish County, this funding would address a top priority of the U.S. Navy by improving security for Navy vessels and keeping American sailors safe in ports around the globe.

Intelligraf Training and Maintenance Aid for Above Water Sensors

Recipient:       Dimension4, Inc.

Amount:         $2,500,000

Location:        Bremerton, WA

This funding would allow graphics improvements and maintenance upgrades on a radar system. This would address aging components of a key radar system used on aircraft carriers, thereby lowering maintenance costs and improving radar availability for the Navy.

Madigan Army Medical Center Trauma Assistance Program

Recipient:       Tacoma Trauma Trust (TTT)

Amount:         $3,000,000

Location:        Tacoma, WA

This funding would provide military medical personnel at Madigan Army Medical Center with critical trauma care experience in local hospitals and also expand trauma treatment for military beneficiaries and civilians in the region. In addition to lowering the cost and improving the quality of health care for local residents, this would help deployed military doctors provide the best possible care to wounded warfighters.

Critical Infrastructure Interdependencies Vulnerabilities Assessment Program (CIIVA)

Recipient:       Washington Military Department

Amount:         $2,500,000

Location:        McChord Air Force Base, WA

This funding would allow the Washington Air National Guard to assess and detect cyber threats to state, federal and military critical infrastructure, which includes power, water, communications, sewer and emergency services. This would help protect the people and economy of the United States from cyber threats and ensure that essential services remain functional in the event of a cyber attack.

Western Regional Counterdrug Training Center

Recipient:       Washington Military Department

Amount:         $2,500,000

Location:        Camp Murray, WA

This funding would create a counterdrug prevention, detection, and interdiction training center at the Army National Guard installation at Camp Murray. This world-class, multi-use training and education center would offer vital training to federal, state, local and tribal law enforcement officers to provide them with the skills needed to protect communities in Washington state and across the nation from illegal narcotics trafficking and the threat of narcoterrorism.

Advanced Fiber Lasers Systems and Components

Recipient:       nLight

Amount:         $4,000,000

Location:        Vancouver, WA

This funding would be used to improve the Air Force’s eye-safe laser capabilities by developing advanced fiber laser technology. In addition to supporting engineering jobs in Clark County, WA, this would improve military laser technology used to counter roadside bombs and other threats to the warfighter.

2.0kW Stirling Tactical Cogeneration System (STaCS)

Recipient:       Infinia Corporation

Amount:         $3,000,000

Location:        Kennewick, WA

This funding would be used to develop a small, low maintenance engine for the Army that uses solar power to simultaneously produce hot water and electricity for troops in the field. In addition to supporting jobs in central Washington, this would improve field conditions and safety for warfighters by allowing them to generate hot water and electricity more reliably, efficiently and quietly.

The Biological and Chemical Warfare Online Repository of Technical Holdings 2 System (BACWORTH2)

Recipient:       Battelle Northwest

Amount:         $2,000,000

Location:        Toppenish, WA

This funding would provide access to comprehensive, detailed data on chemical and biological warfare to Department of Defense analysts. This would allow military analysts to better understand threats posed to our country and its citizens by Weapons of Mass Destruction.
