Murray Statement on Perkins Loan Extension Passing the House of Representatives

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Ranking Member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, released the following statement on the House of Representatives passing a bipartisan bill to extend the Perkins Loan Program. Yesterday, the Senate passed the Federal Perkins Loan Program Extension Act of 2015, which provides a two-year extension of the program until a longer term solution can be put in place under the Higher Education Act. The bill now heads to the President’s desk for approval.

“The Perkins Loan Program provides many students, including more than 15,000 in Washington state last year, with a low-cost financial aid option, so I am pleased that we were able to come together to restore this resource,” said Senator Murray “This bipartisan compromise was an important step forward, and as we work in Congress to reauthorize this Higher Education Act, I am going to continue fighting to ensure students have the financial aid tools they need to earn their degree and gain a foothold in the middle class.”

In September, Murray urged her colleagues to extend the program prior to its expiration. This compromise will extend the life of the Perkins Loan Program through September 30, 2017 for eligible students.
