Murray Statement on President Obama Signing CHIP Reauthorization

(Washington, D.C.) –  Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) issued the following statement after President Obama signed the Children’s Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act of 2009 (CHIP) into law.

“The real winners today are the thousands of new Washington state kids now eligible for care.  And at the end of a long, tough political battle, they’re all that counts.

“This has been a long time coming, but it couldn’t come at more important time. With parents losing their jobs across our state each day, more children are joining the ranks of the uninsured. Thankfully, we finally have a President that is demonstrating his commitment to seeing that no child goes without health care.

“Throughout this process, I have been aided by children and their parents who have lent their voices and stories to the fight to cover more kids. I’ve also heard from so many Washingtonians who say that without CHIP they wouldn’t be able to pay the medical bills. Today they have achieved a monumental victory.”

Senator Murray recently gave an emotional speech that uses the story of a 6 year-old Marysville girl to urge passage of the CHIP
