(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Chair of the Senate Transportation Appropriations Subcommittee, applauded the U.S. Department of Transportation’s announcement that the Friday Harbor Airport in the San Juan Islands will receive $1.2 million in federal funding. The funding will enable the airport to keep pace with the changing needs of their communities and help with the rapid growth of passengers flying in and out of the airports. Specifically, the grant will assist in the replacement of the runway visual guidance system and will go toward rehabilitation of the taxiway and runways.
Jefferson County International Airport and Bremerton National Airport will also receive grants.
“This is great news for Friday Harbor and other communities throughout the San Juan Islands,” said Senator Patty Murray. “I’m pleased that we are continuing to invest in our state’s airports so they can continue to play a strong role in supporting the economy and transportation needs of Washington.”
Breakdown of funding is as follows:
- $1,222,074 to Friday Harbor Airport to install runway guidance system and rehabilitate taxiway
- $100,000 to Bremerton National Airport to conduct a Wildlife Hazard Assessment to identify the wildlife species observed and assess their numbers, locations, local movement, and daily/seasonal activities.
- $337,000 to Jefferson County International Airport to install weather reporting equipment
