(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) announced that $24.3 million has been awarded by the U.S. Department of Energy to support energy efficiency and renewable energy projects in Washington state. These awards were funded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
“Investing in efficiency and clean energy technology is good for the environment, and it will create jobs and boost the local economy,” said Senator Patty Murray. “These funds will provide a shot in the arm to the growing Washington state clean energy and energy efficiency sector which is so critical for the future of our economy.”
The awards come from nearly $204 million in Recovery Act funding awarded today nationwide to support energy efficiency and renewable energy projects in ten states.
Washington state will use Recovery Act funding through the State Energy Program to support the development of clean energy policy , leverage private additional financing of energy efficiency projects, and promote energy assessments in the agricultural sector, which will result in significant job creation , clean energy production, and energy savings across the state.
After demonstrating successful implementation of its plan, the state will receive more than $30 million in additional funding, for a total of over $60 million.
As a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, which oversees Energy funding, Sen. Murray worked to ensure that investments in clean energy technology and energy efficiency were included in the Recovery Act. Senator Murray voted to pass the Recovery Act on February 13th. The bill was signed into law by President Obama on February 17th.
