Senator Murray Applauds Washington State Green Jobs Workforce Grants

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Chairman of the Senate HELP Employment and Workplace Safety Subcommittee, applauded the announcement of two major grants awarded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The Washington State Employment Security Department will be receiving $1,060,910 to help ensure that Washington state has the data and resources it needs to prepare workers, and the Apprenticeship and Nontraditional Employment for Women (ANEW) will be receiving $100,000 to help at-risk and veteran women train for jobs in green industries.

“Our state is well positioned to take the lead in our country’s clean energy future,” said Senator Murray. “But we need trained workers to get the ball rolling. These grants will help provide the skills and training our unemployed workers need to get back into the workforce and give the next generation of workers the skills they’ll need for 21st Century careers.”

Washington State Labor Market Information Improvement Grant– $1,060,910

The project will combine green jobs data with existing workforce information to create a comprehensive set of tools and reports to assist job seekers and job counselors in transitioning people into green jobs. The project will also create a network of data exchange services. Project deliverables will include an enhanced green occupational profile and comparison reports, integrated data services to exchange information with other state systems, enhanced and integrated workforce and economic monitoring and analytical tools, and an online training resource to promote the understanding of workforce and economic concepts and the green economy.

Washington Green Capacity Building Grant— $100,000

Apprenticeship and Nontraditional Employment for Women (ANEW)

The grantee will train women who are low?income, unemployed, and who may have a criminal record; veterans; and at?risk youth living in the Pacific Northwest Puget Sound Region and Greater Portland Region for the country’s expanding green industries. Target industries include residential weatherization and energy efficiency, commercial energy efficiency and construction recycling, and hazardous waste disposal. The project will develop a green training curriculum, track career pathway options so program graduates can enter targeted fields more easily, and train more than 100 students.

As Chairman of the Employment and Workplace Safety Subcommittee and a recognized leader on worker training, Senator Murray guided the grants to inclusion in the Recovery Act.  Senator Murray voted to pass the Recovery Act on February 13th. The bill was signed into law by President Obama on February 17th.
