Senator Murray Meets with Energy Nominee Ernest Moniz

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray met with Dr. Ernest Moniz, President Obama’s nominee for Secretary of Energy, to discuss a variety of energy issues important to the country, the Pacific Northwest, and Washington state.

“I had a very productive discussion today with Dr. Moniz on our nation’s energy policies and issues specific to Washington state that require strong leadership from the Department of Energy.

“First and foremost, we discussed the most pressing environmental cleanup issue in Washington state and our region: nuclear waste cleanup at the Hanford site.  We walked through our existing federal obligations and discussed the importance of developing a comprehensive, long-term plan to treat the dangerous waste within limited federal resources.

“We also discussed the vital role that the Bonneville Power Administration plays to meet the energy demands of our region, and the importance of a productive working relationship between the Pacific Northwest delegation and federal energy officials.”
