Senator Murray on Proposed Cuts to Refugee Admissions: Trump Abdicating Our Country’s Long-Held Values and Rebuking National Security Experts

(Washington, D.C.)  – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) released the following statement after the Trump administration proposed capping the number of refugees allowed into the U.S. to 30,000 during the next fiscal year, the lowest level since the refugees admissions program began in 1980.

“It’s incredibly disappointing to see President Trump once again using fear and division in place of sound policy,” Senator Murray said. “By slamming the door on families fleeing atrocities around the world, he is not only abdicating our country’s long-held values and commitment to the global community, he is rebuking the recommendations of national security experts who know that a robust refugee program is a strategic piece of our military, diplomatic, and intelligence interests abroad. Bureaucracy and backlogs are not an acceptable excuse, and I will continue to do everything in my power to shine a spotlight on the President’s mean-spirited agenda that targets those who are suffering on the world’s watch. This is not what America should be about now, or ever.”

Last month, Senator Murray lead an official request with Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) to President Trump, urging him to step up his efforts and honor America’s legacy as a safe haven for families fleeing persecution. You can read their letter HERE.
