Senator Murray on Resignation of Cecile Richards As President of Planned Parenthood

“I am so grateful for Cecile’s leadership, friendship, and all she has done for women and for our country”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U. S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), top Democrat on the Senate health committee and the highest ranking woman in the Senate, issued the following statement on the resignation of Cecile Richards as President and CEO of Planned Parenthood.

“For over a decade, Cecile Richards has led not just Planned Parenthood, but women across the country in standing strong for a woman’s right to make her own choices about her own body, and against those who would leave our daughters and granddaughters with fewer rights and less opportunity.

“I hear so often from women, and men, that were it not for Planned Parenthood they wouldn’t have the family they love now—that they wouldn’t have the chance to get an education and pursue their dreams—or even that they may not have caught their cancer in time to see their children grow up.

“It is thanks to Cecile’s tireless leadership that Planned Parenthood’s doors have stayed open, no matter what, for millions of patients who depend on it as their trusted medical provider. And I have no doubt that Cecile’s equally limitless belief in the power of women has motivated millions to stand up just as strong as she has and make their voices heard.

“I am so grateful for Cecile’s leadership, friendship, and all she has done for women and for our country. I am confident the incredible team she built at Planned Parenthood will keep up the fight, and that in whatever she does next, she will continue to lead and inspire.”
