Senator Murray Reintroduces Resolution to Protect National Fuel Economy Standards

Bill reintroduction follows recent Trump Administration decision to revoke a waiver allowing California, and by extension Washington state, to install more ecologically-friendly fuel emission standards

Proposed rollback is consistent with President Trump’s anti-environment agenda, undermines progress in the fight against climate change

(Washington, D.C.) – U.S. Senator Patty Murray on Wednesday joined 33 of her Senate  colleagues to reintroduce a Senate resolution in response to the Trump Administration’s efforts to roll back federal fuel economy and greenhouse gas standards designed to fight climate change and protect Americans’ access to clean air. Senator Murray and her colleagues reintroduced the resolution in advance of the Administration’s expected move to formally revoke states’ authority to set their own automobile emission standards, including in Washington state.

“Instead of taking action that scientists and families across our country have been demanding, , President Trump has shown time and again that he is unwilling to address the growing climate crisis facing our planet,” Senator Murray said. “I am proud that Washington state has been a leader in efforts to reduce vehicle emissions that are harmful to our environment, and I will continue working in the Senate to fight against attempts to roll back the progress made in my home state to protect our communities from the dangers of climate change.”

Under the Clean Air Act, states are able to acquire waivers from the federal government in order to dictate higher emission standards than the federal government. Currently Washington state, California, and 12 other states as well as the District of Columbia employ these waivers. Several top auto-makers have already agreed to a deal with California that would set emission standards at more environmentally-friendly levels than those set by the Trump Administration.

Senator Murray has consistently fought against the Trump Administration’s efforts to roll back emission standards, leading the charge against the administration’s attempts to freeze fuel economy emissions standards going forward at 2020 levels.
