Senator Murray Secures $500,000 for Lacey I-5 Interchange Project

(Washington, D.C) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) announced that she has included $500,000 in funding for this critical transportation project in Thurston county in the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations bill. Senator Murray is the Chairman of the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development (THUD) Appropriations Subcommittee.

The Lacey Interchange Project funding will help complete an Interchange Justification Report which is required before construction of a new interchange at I-5/SR510 can commence.  There is considerable congestion at the current intersection and during rush-hour, traffic backs up onto the I-5 exit lane.

"Northeast Thurston county is experiencing tremendous growth," Murray stated.  "This funding will help move forward a much needed interchange project to alleviate traffic pressure and improve safety for motorists utilizing this busy corridor."

Mayor Virgil Clarkson of Lacey applauded Murray’s efforts:

“We are absolutely thrilled to hear the announcement that Senator Murray has secured $500,000 for the City of Lacey to assist with the funding of an important transportation corridor enhancement project along I-5 through Lacey.   This critical interstate corridor needs additional resources to relieve congestion, improve safety conditions, and prepare for the increased economic growth in the region.  We are very thankful for the leadership provided by Senator Murray in advocating for us on Capitol Hill.  She is familiar with the problems our region faces and continues to be a true champion for our residents.”

In addition to providing access to Lacey, the I-5/SR-510 Interchange also serves as a route to Mount Rainier National Park.  Funding for this study will be used to provide corridor analysis, traffic modeling, environmental review, solution prioritization and pre-design of the preferred alternative.

The THUD Appropriations bill passed the full Appropriations Committee today and will move on to the Senate floor for consideration.
