Senator Murray Statement on Meeting with Zelenskyy

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, issued the following statement after participating in a Senators-only meeting with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine.

“Today, I received a firsthand update from President Zelenskyy on Ukraine’s defensive efforts against Russia’s brutal and unprovoked war of aggression. At this critical moment in the war and Ukraine’s counteroffensive, it’s so important that Congress continues our strong and bipartisan support for Ukraine, so they have the resources and weapons they need to defend themselves against Putin’s invasion.

“Democracy must prevail—and because of the heroism and courage of the Ukrainian people, I believe it will. Ukraine is a humanitarian priority, yes, but it is also a key national security priority for our country—and it’s important that the American people and members of Congress understand that. The United States cannot afford to let dictators like Putin bulldoze democracy in whatever part of the world they wish. We cannot waver in our support for our Ukrainian allies.”
