Senator Murray Statement on Senator Boxer’s Plans for the Future

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) released the following statement after Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) announced that she will not seek re-election in 2016.

“Throughout her life and career, Barbara Boxer has been a journalist, a mother, a congressional aide, an author, a grandmother, and a United States Senator, and for the last twenty years, I’ve been proud to call her a colleague and a dear friend.

“Barbara and I were each elected to the Senate in 1992, the ‘Year of the Woman,’ and since then, she has been a tireless advocate for the state of California, for our country, and for so many of the issues and causes that needed a true progressive champion in Congress.

“From her work to protect the environment and preserve California’s natural wonders to the years she has spent fighting for women’s health care, quality public education, and disease prevention around the globe, Barbara has left a truly lasting impact on our country.

“Anyone who knows Barbara knows that her retirement from the Senate does not mean that her work is over.  For the remainder of her term, I know that she will continue to be a strong, progressive voice in the Senate, and that she will continue her work when she leaves Congress.”
