Senator Murray: “Strongly Support” President’s Plan to Replace Job-Killing Automatic Budget Cuts

(Washington, D.C) —Today, U.S Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), a senior member of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committees, released the following statement on President Obama’s plans to replace the automatic cuts from sequestration in his upcoming budget.

“I strongly support the President’s proposal to build on the Murray-Ryan bipartisan budget deal and continue restoring critical investments in education, research, and defense jobs. Our economy is moving in the right direction, but we can’t stop working together to create growth and opportunity that benefits all families, not just the wealthiest few. Democrats and Republicans agree that the automatic budget cuts are bad for our economy and our country, and I am hopeful that Republicans can put middle class families and our troops above the wealthiest Americans and biggest corporations and will work with me and other Democrats on another balanced and responsible replacement to these senseless cuts.”

At the end of 2013, Senator Murray and Rep. Ryan worked with their colleagues to pass the Bipartisan Budget Act, which prevented another government shutdown, rolled back sequestration evenly across defense and non-defense discretionary spending for two years, and moved Congress away from the constant crises.
