Senator Murray’s Statement on Farm Bill Veto Override

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) issued the following statement after the Senate voted to override the President’s veto of the Farm Bill by a vote of 82-13.

"This year’s Farm Bill is a victory for Washington state, our farmers, and our economy. It invests in jobs, ensures more families put a nutritious meal on their table, and for the first time provides meaningful support for our fruit and vegetable growers. It also makes needed investments in our agriculture industry to ensure we remain competitive and innovative in the global marketplace.

"This legislation isn’t perfect, but after years of the Bush Administration neglecting our domestic needs, this bill makes badly needed investments here at home. In fact, with the vast majority of the spending in the bill going to specialty crop growers, nutrition programs, rural development, conservation and alternative energy, this is the best Farm Bill Washington state has seen in years.

"These are tough times.  People are struggling across our country, particularly in our rural communities. While President Bush is content to once again turn his back on their needs, I am not."
