Senator Murray’s Statement on Passage of Major Housing Bill to Help Stem the Tide of Foreclosures

Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) released the following statement after she helped to pass S. 896 the Helping Families Save Their Homes Act of 2009. The bill passed the Senate by a vote of 91-5.

“While there have been glimmers of hope in our state’s housing market recently, we cannot forget that families in every corner of Washington continue to lose their homes to foreclosure every day. In only the first three months of this year, over 10,000 foreclosure signs went up in front of homes in our state as once stable families were forced to put their dreams on hold.

“The legislation we passed today takes steps to improve and expand existing housing programs so that more families have a shot at help.  The bill will allow the Federal Housing Administration to modify more loans, expand access to the HOPE for Homeowners Program, and authorize additional federal support for federal foreclosure prevention efforts.

“We are all affected by the collapsing housing market and we all have an interest in turning things around.  The legislation we passed today takes smart steps to enhance programs already on the books and is a key step forward in efforts to improve our economy as a whole.“
