Statement by Senator Patty Murray on Senate Passage of the Energy Bill

(Washington, D.C.) – Tonight U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-Wash) voted for comprehensive energy legislation.   The Senate will now send H.R.6 back to the House for final approval.

Murray’s statement follows:

“The comprehensive energy legislation we approved today is a good step toward a cleaner and safer America.  This legislation will help us break our addiction to foreign oil by encouraging the development of renewable fuel, setting new standards for energy efficiency, and increasing fuel economy standards for cars for the first time in 30 years.

“Our families and businesses are feeling the pinch from high gas and heating prices, but this legislation will bring them some much-needed relief.  It will help build a more secure future by reducing our reliance on oil from unfriendly nations, and using innovation and education to help us develop cleaner sources of energy.

“I want to thank Senator Maria Cantwell for her leadership on this issue.  Her work will help allow us to take important strides toward reducing climate change, and it will help make the federal government a leader in energy efficiency.

“I am deeply disappointed that a majority of Republicans today blocked a package of important tax incentives, which would spur the development of renewable electricity, increase the production of alternative transportation fuels, and help homeowners who make their properties more energy efficient.  It also would have provided certainty to our rural forest counties who depend on the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self Determination Act, commonly known as county payments.  I will continue to work with my colleagues on the important issues that were left behind.”

This week, Senator Murray also introduced legislation to develop and stimulate sustainable and environmentally-friendly energy programs on college campuses.
