ZIKA: Murray Urges Republicans to Stop Pandering to Tea Party, Work With Democrats to Protect Women and Families From Virus

Murray: “Republicans should stop pandering to the Tea Party by using women’s health as a political football, and instead, finally get to work with us on a serious emergency funding package”

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray, top Democrat on the Senate Labor, Health, and Human Services appropriations subcommittee, issued the following statement urging Republicans to drop their partisan Zika conference report and work with Democrats on a serious emergency funding package in response to the virus.

“I was deeply disappointed that Republicans chose to take a huge step backwards on Zika by introducing a hyperpartisan proposal, passing it through the House in the middle of the night, and then leaving town—and I’m even more disappointed that the Senate plans to waste additional precious time debating this irresponsible legislation next week. Republicans should stop pandering to the Tea Party by using women’s health as a political football, and instead, finally get to work with us on a serious emergency funding package to fight this frightening virus. We have a narrow window of time to get an effective response to Zika underway, and for the sake of women and families across the country, I hope Republicans will stop spending it on partisan politics.”
