LABOR: Murray Statement on Confirmation of NLRB General Counsel

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray, a senior member of the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, released the following statement after she voted to confirm Richard Griffin as the General Counsel of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).

“While families across our country are working overtime to get back on their feet and recover from the recession, it’s vitally important that Congress do its part to protect American workers with a fully staffed, fully functioning NLRB,” said Senator Murray.  “For too long, some of my colleagues have chosen to play politics with critical nominations like this one, so I’m thrilled that Mr. Griffin’s confirmation received bipartisan support today.  His confirmation will immediately strengthen this important agency, and I will continue working to ensure the NLRB has the resources it needs to serve workers and employers in Washington state and across the country.”

The National Labor Relations Board is an independent federal agency created by Congress in 1935 to administer the National Labor Relations Act, the primary law governing relations between unions and employers in the private sector. The statute guarantees the right of employees to organize and to bargain collectively with their employers, and to engage in other protected concerted activity with or without a union, or to refrain from all such activity.
