Senator Murray Announces $2 Million to Provide New Facility for King County Homeless Veterans

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) announced that the Compass Center in Renton, WA – a homeless shelter serving men and women in King County – will receive $2,000,000 in federal funding through a grant program funded by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The VA grant will be used by Compass Center to construct a new homeless veterans center to serve veterans in King County. Senator Murray worked with the Compass Center to overcome administrative challenges that threatened their ability to compete for the grant program.

“This funding will help extend a lifeline to more homeless veterans living in King County,” said Senator Murray. “Our veterans have served the nation with honor and they deserve to live in a safe and dignified manner when they come home. This funding will help provide more King County veterans with the transitional housing and the one-on-one support they need to get back on their feet. I’m proud to have worked with Compass Center to ensure that they remained eligible for this critical funding.”

The funding that Compass Center has been awarded will be used for construction of a facility for homeless and formerly homeless veterans living in King County. Current plans call for a center that will include 58 housing units for homeless veterans and their dependents.

“The Compass Center is both pleased and honored to be the recipient of a grant from the Veterans Administration that will help to build the Renton Veterans Center,” said Rick Friedhoff, Director of the Compass Center. “The Veterans Center will provide supportive housing for single adult veterans, and veterans with families, who have served our country and deserve our thanks and respect. The dream of this building will become a reality because of the cooperation and commitment of many people and organizations. We are grateful to Senator Murray and the local officials who have supported our efforts.”

The funding announced today for Compass Center is part of a grant program that is supporting facilities in 35 states, plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) the grants – which total $36.7 million nationwide – will help to create 1,526 beds for homeless veterans this year. – Details

In Washington state, the Volunteers of America of Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho in Spokane will also receive $24,700 in funding for renovations that will provide six beds for homeless veterans.
