(Washington D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray applauded a decision by the Landmarks Committee of the National Park System Advisory Board to consider National Historic Landmark status for Hanford’s B Reactor.  Senator Murray toured the B Reactor last Thursday, November 30th and received briefings on on-going Hanford cleanup measures.

“Today’s unanimous decision by the Landmarks Committee is a true step forward for the B Reactor and the people of the Tri-Cities,” Senator Murray said.  “Designating the B Reactor as a National Historic Landmark will help preserve the legacy of our region in American history.  The B Reactor is both an important symbol of our nation’s transition into the nuclear age and a reminder of the service and sacrifice that came with it.  I look forward to the preservation of the site for future generations.”

Today’s vote by the Landmarks Committee is the first step in designating B Reactor as a National Historic Landmark.  Next, the full National Parks System Advisory Board must meet to consider the nomination.  If the full Board recommends the nomination, the Secretary of Interior can then make the decision to designate the facility as a National Historic Site.
